How MediaMath Scaled Their Creative Team Without Increasing Headcount

DEC 05, 2015

SUMMARY

MediaMath hit triple digit growth every year since inception. Their meteoric growth is supported by an extremely capable internal design team. However, because of their intense need to scale, it has become difficult to balance their day-to-day design projects with long-term design needs. Recognizing this was an issue, the team at MediaMath used their Illustria membership to get their long-term projects done.

WE HAVE WORKED WITH FREELANCERS IN THE PAST, BUT THE BENEFITS OF WORKING WITH A TEAM LIKE ILLUSTRIA IS THAT IT IS A TEAM. – Pete Gosling, Creative Director

ABOUT MEDIAMATH

MediaMath is a global technology company that drives results for marketers with its powerful tools for data, execution, and optimized interactions. Through their revolutionary TerminalOne™platform, they allow marketers to control their entire marketing ecosystem and optimize their marketing based on quantifiable goals.

THE CHALLENGE

MediaMath’s rapid growth presents a special challenge for Pete Gosling, the Creative Director at MediaMath and his team: “Working at a fast paced and growing company offers many challenges in the needs of creative services. The types of requests that come in from the organization cover all forms of media. Printed collateral, web graphics, exhibition signage, rich-media advertising, and presentations often require very fast turnaround times.”

There’s plenty of design work that needs to be taken care of day-to-day in addition to longer-term design projects. However, because of the immediacy of the day-to-day projects, the longer-term projects the team at MediaMath wanted to do had a tendency to get sidelined.

MediaMath looked at various sources for creative talent. Hiring freelancers helped a little, but tracking their hours and figuring out exactly when they were available proved to be inefficient. Hiring more people for their in-house team wasn’t the answer either. “Building a creative team in-house has a large number of benefits, but it takes time and financial commitment in order to do it correctly,” says Pete.

CHOOSING ILLUSTRIA

MediaMath decided to join Illustria because Illustria’s membership model fit their needs in a way completely different from any other design solution. Unlike in-house recruiting, an Illustria Membership could be implemented overnight, and unlike hiring freelancers, project management was easy and accessibility was a given. By working with Illustria, MediaMath could stay focused on their pressing needs while still meeting demand.

HOW ILLUSTRIA HELPED

Illustria assigned Pete an art director, who quickly got up-to-date on MediaMath’s brand standards during an Initial Brand Consultation (IBC). This made sure that any projects Pete submitted would adhere to brand standards. When Pete submitted his projects, Illustria’s project management team scheduled them to meet his deadlines. Because of this, Pete could submit the longer-term projects he and his team wanted to complete to Illustria with the assurance of quality work and on-time delivery.

Pete was able to trust his team at Illustria to deliver, how and when he needed it, regardless of the volume. Illustria’s team of creative professionals were dedicated to MediaMath’s success and provided comprehensive capabilities. “While we continue to grow, Illustria has been a great resource for us to help fulfill the company’s needs. We have worked with freelancers in the past, but the benefits of working with a team like Illustria is that it is a TEAM. We’re not reliant on just one source of support,” says Pete.

RESULTS

MediaMath’s Illustria membership allowed Pete’s team to get the design they needed to support their continued growth. Pete says, “You can be confident that the brief set will be delivered on time and to a high level of quality.” This has laid the groundwork for a long-term partnership that lets the team at MediaMath get more done, at scale.
